Trip Description

This seldom-visited trekking region is very accessible given its close proximity to Kathmandu. Often overlooked by trekkers in favor of the Everest or Annapurna regions, the Langtang valley is no less impressive. With dense forest which explodes into color in the spring season, abundant wildlife and a rich mosaic of cultures, you will come away from this trip with the sensation that you have just visited one of the most beautiful valleys in the world.

Trip Description:

Arriving in Kathmandu, we have a few days to get our bearings and taste some of the delights of this ancient city. On day three, we head off in our minibus to Dhunche, the start point of our trek.

For the first few days of the trek, we skirt the banks of the Trisuli River that originates in Tibet. We pass through various scattered villages and fields of barley, wheat and maize. The trail soon turns eastward. After crossing the Langtang Khola, we start our climb up the Langtang valley through excellent forest of rhododendron, chirr and blue pine. The scenery soon starts to take on a different feel, becoming much steeper as the trail meanders between steep gorges and high wooded slopes. Langtang is a narrow valley, sandwiched between the main Himalayan range and a slightly lower range of snowy peaks to the south. The valley is dominated by Langtang Lirung (7,246 m) in the north, Gang Chenpo (6,388 m) to the south and Dorje Lakpa (6,975 m) to the east. From our highpoint at Kyanjin Gompa (3,800 m) there are plenty of day walks to gain further height and extend our views.

If you are looking for a trek through the Himalayas that offers unspoilt charm, culture and pristine natural beauty, Langtang is for you. The soaring, snow-capped mountains at the head of the Langtang valley, the beautiful glacial lakes and the friendly Tamang and Bhote villages combine to make this a true classic.
